Ask Abbey Road: reverb, sidechaining and budget

Abbey Road Studio’s music production school, Abbey Road Institute, is set to open its doors to US citizens this year, with a school set to open in Miami, Florida. Multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy winner, Julio Reyes Copello is partnering with Abbey Road Institute to open the school at his studio, Miami Art House.

Copello is known for his work with Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Will Smith, Alessia Cara and other huge names in the industry. He will act as a mentor to the select group of students joining the school at his studio complex. His team at the studio will contribute to teaching the budding producers on a day-to-day basis. One aim of the school is to bring “the reality of studio life directly to the student experience with the school occupying a space within the building alongside the commercial studios”.

Julio Reyes Copello says of the project ‘‘my goal is for aspiring producers, engineers and artists to learn by direct experience. To be thrown in the middle of actual professional recording sessions and learn by doing, is the most effective, honest and responsible way of acquiring the skills needed for a career in music. I aim to guide, educate and inspire the future generations of music professionals while staying fully involved and engaged in my work as a music producer for the most important and upcoming artists of the industry”.

Here’s a brief look at how the Abbey Road Institute London functions:

Abbey Road Insitute, lead by London-based CEO, Luca Barassi, offers intensive and immersive education for aspiring producers and engineers in an intimate setting. The teaching style is similar to an apprenticeship, with a hands-on approach focusing on high-quality audio education. The school is designed to prepare graduates to enter the fast-paced music industry and draw their own career path. The ethos and curriculum of the Institute is built on 90 years of expertise and innovation within Abbey Road Studios.

Copello and Abbey Road Institute will be offering qualifications in the form of a Diploma in Music Production and Sound Engineering, plus a newly launched and bespoke Diploma in Music Performance at Miami Art House Academy. The Music Performance course is designed to be a training ground for up and coming artists, working closely with the students on the Music Production course. This will offer experience for both camps, as well as being a catalyst for one another to speed up their learning in the respective subjects. The end product of this collaboration will result in a fully, professionally produced EP, overseen by Reyes Copello and his team. The EP and experience will be “an invaluable asset to launch their professional careers”, Abbey Road Institute says.

With ties to the major labels, thanks to the Institute being born out of collaboration with Abbey Road Studios and Universal Music Group, the music industry is likely to be keeping an eye on graduates rising through the Miami-based school. As a member of the board, Universal Music UK’s COO David Sharpe has said “the music industry today is so competitive anyone entering their first job in production and recording needs to be ultra-skilled and motivated. Having an Abbey Road Institute education under their belts will not only prepare them for the working world but really help them stand out.”

The school will be enrolling its first intake of students onto the Diploma in Music Production and Sound Engineering in the fall of 2020. Applications are open now for suitable candidates. More information on the course and how to apply can be found at abbeyroadinstitute.com
