Charitable software developer 2getheraudio has unleashed OpZilla, which is touted as an “FM Monster”. The soft synth takes on a similar appearance to the brand’s virtual analogue beast, Cheeze Machine Pro. It also takes on the same price point; the minimum price of OpZilla is $10 but you can pay as much as you like, with 10 per cent going to a charity of your choice.

OpZilla features 64 four-operator algorithms with 16 waveforms per oscillator, all immediately accessible with an intuitive GUI. Each of the four operators features its own amp envelope modes – ADSR, loop and one-shot – plus tuning and filtering parameters. You can combine operators into any of the 64 algorithms with control over feedback and FM amounts, which 2getheraudio says can provide “unlimited sonic options”. You can set the amount of signal being sent back into the operator to create self-modulation and increase the amount of harmonics.

Two LFOs per voice are onboard the soft synth, which can modulate FM amount and pitch. To get more drastic with effects, you can deploy distortion, chorus, delay and reverb all independently in the bottom right panel with various controls for each effect engine. OpZilla is built with sampled attacks, which you can select and browse just above the effects panel. You can adjust the volume of the attack, plus its velocity and pitch.

2getheraudio has built OpZilla with over 150 presets that include the classic FM-style sounds such as synth strings, bass, bells, pianos and more. However, as the company says, those sounds alone wouldn’t make the synth much of a monster. To keep it beastly, the tweakable presets include unique sounds that can be used in any style of music.

If you missed out on a Black Friday deal, perhaps $10 for this synth could be your saving grace. There is a free trial available, too, in case you’re really unsure. OpZilla is available in VST, AU, AAX and standalone formats for macOS and Windows.
