We got to chat with renowned 90s DJ Miss Tyson at Thirty3Hz…

The Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) recently hosted an intimate masterclass with the legendary DJ Miss Tyson. Having risen to fame in the ‘90s and ultimately becoming DJ Mag’s ‘UK Redemption DJ of the Year’ in 1998, DJ Miss Tyson has performed on stages at Glastonbury and T in the Park, as well as on a multitude of radio shows.

Held at local music venue Thirty3Hz, Miss Tyson gave students an overview on her background and career, before diving into a workshop on DJing with vinyl decks. Students were invited up behind the decks to learn first-hand what it takes to be a DJ. Miss Tyson showed students the basic techniques, before allowing them each some time to put together a mini-set.

Having worked through the ‘90s, Miss Tyson spoke about the change from analogue to digital, and how the industry is now actually moving back to vinyl DJ performances. Keen to learn a new technique, students jumped at the chance try DJing with vinyl, and thoroughly enjoyed putting some mixes together.

The class wrapped up with Miss Tyson showing students how to line up a track, queue it, and adjust the speeds of the records. She then demonstrated how to mix two tracks together.

The students left the class having learned a huge amount and were excited to have tried DJing on vinyl. Miss Tyson thoroughly enjoyed passing her knowledge on to the talented students saying “ACM’s brilliant because what they offer musically is absolutely amazing, anything that can help young people get into the music industry has got to be a bonus, any help students can get is brilliant and I understand ACM does everything to help promote young people to get to where they want to be.”
